Poland map.Piekary Śląskie is a town located in Śląskie Voivodeship (Province), southern Poland, in the centre of the Upper Silesian Industrial Area. The town was founded in 1934 as a result of the merging of two communes: Szarlej and Wielkie Piekary. Between 1303 and 1318 the first church was built and an independent parish established. In the 15th century along with the development of zinc and lead mining industry the whole settlement started to evolve. In the 12th and 14th centuries, the germanized Silesian dukes governed the town, but a short visit of the King Jan III Sobieski rushing to relief Vienna in 1683 caused that memory about the Polish origin livened among the people living here. In the 1870s, thanks to the miners and steelworkers from the Upper Silesia, a Calvary was built on Cerekwica Hill near the Basilica. It is a complex of 14 chapels symbolising the Stations of the Cross. On June 20, 1937 a 333m high mound - Kopiec Wyzwolenia - was erected in Kocie Górki to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Vienna and the 15th anniversary of the liberation of the Silesian Region. |
