Jaslo description, location, history

Jasło is a district town in Podkarpackie Voivodeship (Province). The town, with elevations varying between 225 and 380 m above sea level, is located in south eastern Poland in the area of Doły Jasielsko-Sanockie at the intersections of the rivers Wisłok, Ropa and Jasiołka.

In 1262 Boleslaus the Bashful granted Jasiel settlement a financial and judicial immunity. On April 20, 1365 King Casimir the Great granted the village town rights and customs privilege.

Beginning with the 15th century, the Wallachian and Ruthenian newcomers started to inhabit the area.

After 1772 Jasło belonged to the Austrian Monarchy and in 1790 Joseph II granted the town numerous privileges and confirmed earlier royal acts. The town became the seat of the administration of the district; a number of public utility buildings were erected.

In the years 1859 - 1890 in the nearby Niegłowice a refinery was built. Another important event in the town's history was opening of the railway lines: Stróże - Jasło - Krosno - Sanok and Jasło - Rzeszów.

During the First World War the development of the Jasło region was hindered and a number battles were fought there.

In 1918 a flag with a Polish Eagle (instead of an Austrian one) appeared on the building of the Poviat Starosty (local government). In 1937, due to the establishment of the "Gramat" Plastic Plant in the Central Industrial Region, the economic situation of the region improved.

During World War II there was a strong resistance movement, especially active were the Polish Home Army (AK), People's Guard and Polish Peasants' Battalions.

The town was destroyed and burnt down by the withdrawing Germans; only 3% of the original town remained. In September 1944 Jasło inhabitants were resettled to the nearby villages on the west. After the war there were plans to relocate the town to another place but its inhabitants decided to rebuild it.

In 1965 St. Anthony church and the Franciscan Monastery, located at the crossroad of Chopin and 3rd May Street, were built. In the same year also, the building of the Court and District Public Prosecutor's Office in Jasło was finished.
